    the old superlist website had animations, but not too many. perfect it had an animated header, but not too flashy some type of animation on some bullet points and the rest was static or slideshow

    GOLLY was that controversial. I could think of about 5 different ways what he said is wrong for about 47 of these each. I'm pretty sure he just wants you to not do anything special so he looks better and gets more business. There were even things he said that were just logically incorrect. Otherwise it was simply opinionated and, even worse, pretty nearsighted. All I saw was mostly a ton of creativity and even in some of the more extreme cases I saw something that just might not be for everybody, which is feasibly OK because you might not want to hit the common denominator at times. Sorry, but this was pretty horrible. The only thing I gathered, which was a really good revelation, was something completely between the lines that I doubt this muttonhead ever thought about. It was just WAY too strong for how weak his arguments were, if he had any at all. I mean, people are making money off this stuff, it's working... Are you gonna tell us that birds in the Galapagos should have the same beak shape? Evolution doesn't care about your opinion my man.

    here's a thing that drives me insane: When a website for a brick and mortar business inexplicably buries their hours or their street address, the two things I most often want to google before physically going there.

    I like it! I have a question though: what would you recommend putting on the homepage if it’s not your portfolio? I don’t see another more important objective the homepage could serve than giving an overview of you/your work.

    UX is very subjective; it differs from person to person and usually depends on what a person is trying to solve and whom they are targeting. You come with a set of beliefs and thoughts about what makes a website good; however, it may differ for another person. Some people in these portfolios might be trying to catch the attention of companies by creating something out of the box. I believe these people are very capable of creating something you would want. No website is perfect; it depends on the intent of the website or the portfolio. A portfolio might not even have a CTA, not because the designer doesn't know about it, but because they had another intent. You can have a UX designed just for accessibility or simply to drive conversions-it's all based on the problem at hand. I might have more orders than I can fulfill, so I might remove the CTA from my portfolio.

    I have a doubt about principle no. 3; it suggests that its not the layout that should conform to the content, but the way round (build the layout around the content to display). However, this implies we can follow the principle only when we know the size of the content in the first place: this is not the case when dealing with dynamic content. Also with static content, it could be an issue in case of last minute revisions or additions that significantly change the size of the content (ex: we build a layout in a certain way knowing that we have three cards with a 70-words paragraph and a title each, but then the client adds 100 words to each and removes the titles for legal or commercial reasons). Are these real problems or am I just overthinking?😅

  • @chriswilcox8977
    @chriswilcox8977 3 дня назад

    It’s not just UC designers making these mistakes, it’s web designers and agencies of all sizes. And the problem? Their clients don’t know any better and pay these people to make the same mistakes on their own websites. I think to see the big agencies make these mistakes is shocking, they should know so much better.

    Shouldn't UX designers also design for accessibility? The small white text on a yellow background was totally unreadable in one of the examples. Seems like a pretty basic mistake.

    Another point, visible on the Asiya website is not to have your social media icons at the top of your site. That will encourage visitors (potential customers) to click away from your site, and particularly if your social media sites aren't up to date, or interesting, they will not come back to your website. Social media links should be in the footer as best practice.

    This reminds me of the Facebook vs Myspace fight. Myspace was initially loved because people could customize there profile's HTML, but this soon became annoying as there was no consistency in the user experience. Facebook initially seen as boring grew in popularity because people found comfort in the consistent UX. People love predictable outcomes

But if the timing of a face reveal actually matters to the audience we talked about dropping the avitar vibe over a year ago and now Aaron is finally comfortable enough to assign his face to his voice. Suprise, suprise! ☺ Eric, from San Diego, CA

    Joke's on you, I'm a UX designer and I don't have a website. (I've been fortunate enough to get a lot of word-of-mouth job opportunities and I have a stable UX job, and my writing under my real name has gotten my work out there in other ways.) That being said, I completely agree with your critiques on these sites. Functionality and clarity are the bread and butter of good UX, and there's some of that missing here. But the reason I think it's missing here is because of the interests of hiring managers, not of other UX or web design professionals. Most hiring managers I've had the "pleasure" of speaking with want to see something that looks pretty and that pops. If you follow design conventions, you look boring, and then they need to ask why hire you instead of someone else who can do the same thing for less. So the portfolio site becomes more of a fashion show instead of a site that works, and much like the clothes at a fashion show, these designs should not be worn in public. The trick most designers miss is that you can have something stylized AND functional, but you need to understand why something is functional before you modify it to be stylized. The oval button you shared is a good example of that not working. It doesn't look quite like a button even though it's around where a button should be. The more ways you can subtly signify what things do, the better.

    • @erednmakes4863

      Agree. We need to be accessibility first, then mobile responsiveness, then functionality, then design. Many people get too hung up on the looking pretty, which is one of the most useless parts of a website.

    This is junior advice. You must be careful to caveat your advice based on your experience level and the goal of the website examples you are showing, especially ones from brands, agencies, and designers who are far more experienced than you. You have to learn these rules before you can break them for greater reasons, some of the sites did that here that you aren't experienced enough to talk about.

    You should look for The Aesthetic-Usability Effect. Text from NN/g, in their books they show the data backing up their claims: "The aesthetic-usability effect refers to users’ tendency to perceive attractive products as more usable. People tend to believe that things that look better will work better - even if they aren’t actually more effective or efficient". "Aesthetically pleasing interfaces are worth the investment. Visual designs that appeal to your users have the side effect of making your site appear orderly, well-designed, and professional. Users are more likely to try a visually appealing site, and they’re more patient with minor issues."

  • @Videosuser
    @Videosuser 8 дней назад

    A lot of big companies don't redesign their sites according to the latest trends because there's a behavioral phenomenon in UX called change aversion, besides having other qualities that can sustain an outdated look. Amazon is a very innovative company that provides a unique service such as superfast delivery, a virtually free streaming service, and lower prices. New companies wouldn't face the same luck unless they could provide something as valuable. Design can be a great differentiator when your product becomes a commodity without any significant difference from your competitors. (Visual)Design won't save a bad product/service, just help it.

    I started my first website focusing on appeal, decadence and grandeur. It was shit. Second one I opted for a modern and responsive website. Then, I wanted to show off my css skills with keyframes. And landed in the ditch from here on by growing proficient at backend and increasingly aware of websecurity practices so my later websites became solid working pieces of unnappealing stuff. And minimalism found its way into my brain when I went into my graduation year, which felt like a hard reset on webdesign...

    Thanks Website Architect, I think if you could use an analogy with book design, (I'm not 100% sure you can), it seems clear that it is also constrained by standards, what users expect and the knowledge they come to the object with. If you were to design a book in a very different way, with covers, titles, pages and sections not where the user expects them to be, or using non-contrasting text, for example, the result would be a less than optimal user experience, many would not bother to read.
